How much do blinds cost in the UK? Per window and whole house

By 11 min read
Made to Measure Window Blinds in London

Made to measure blinds cost from £65 per window for a simple roller blind, rising through pleated, vertical, Perfect Fit and Roman blinds to £250 and upwards for electric blinds, with fitting included in our prices.

A typical three bedroom house with eight to ten windows is priced window by window in a written quote, because the size of each window and the fabric you choose change the figure more than the number of windows does. That is the honest answer to how much do blinds cost, and the rest of this guide fills in the detail.

How much do blinds cost UK wide is the question this guide answers, per window and for a whole house.

We make blinds in Rainham and fit them across East London and Essex, and every figure below comes from our own price list, which you can see in full on our blinds and curtains prices page. The prices print live from that list, so they stay current. We cover the cost per window by blind type, a whole house example, what fitting adds, what moves the price up or down, and whether a cheap ready made blind is a saving or a false economy.

How much do blinds cost per window by blind type

Per window, the cheapest made to measure blind is a roller at £65 and the dearest common type is an electric blind at £250, with everything else in between. The table shows our starting price and the range most windows fall into for each type, fitted.

Why the range is so wide

The same blind type can cost three or four times as much on one window as on another. A 600mm wide bathroom roller in a plain fabric sits at the bottom of the range. A 2.4 metre wide living room roller in a premium blackout fabric with a cassette headrail sits at the top. Fabric is bought by the metre and headrail by the length, so width and drop drive the figure directly, and the fabric grade can double it again.

How much do blinds cost for a whole house

A whole house is priced by adding up each window, and for a three bedroom semi that is usually eight to ten blinds, most of them in the lower half of the ranges above because bedrooms and bathrooms have modest windows. The table shows the mix we see most often in a three bed house around Rainham or Romford and the starting price of each type. Your written quote adds up the actual sizes, so we do not print a total here that your windows might not match.

Two things bring a whole house figure down. Choosing the same fabric across several rooms uses the roll more efficiently, and doing every window in one visit means one measuring trip and one fitting day. Two things push it up: a bay counted as three or five blinds rather than one, and electric blinds in the main rooms. We price each line separately so you can see exactly where the money goes and trim a room if you need to.

Fitted or supply only: what fitting adds

Our prices are for blinds measured, made and fitted, so there is no separate fitting charge to add on. A supply only blind from a website or a shop looks cheaper on the label because it leaves the measuring and the fitting to you, and the saving disappears if the blind arrives a centimetre too wide or you have to pay someone to hang it.

What fitting from us includes: a home visit to measure every window, advice on which blind suits each one, the blind made in our Rainham workshop, fitting by the people who made it, chains and tensioners fitted to current child safety rules, and the packaging taken away. If you are comparing a fitted price with a supply only price, ask what happens if the supply only blind does not fit, because with ours that is our problem, not yours. Our page on made to measure window blinds explains the process.

What changes the price of a blind

Five things set the price of any blind: the size, the fabric, the mechanism, the shape of the window and how many you are buying. Size comes first because fabric and headrail are bought by the metre.

Diagram showing how to measure a roller blind, the size that decides how much do blinds cost per window
  • Size: width and drop set the fabric quantity and the headrail length, and very wide blinds need heavier tubes and brackets.
  • Fabric: a plain polyester is the base grade, blackout, flame retardant, moisture resistant and designer prints each add to it.
  • Mechanism: chain is the cheapest, spring and cassette add a little, a motor adds from .
  • Shape: an arch, a triangle or a sloping top is cut and made by hand and costs more than a rectangle of the same area.
  • Quantity: a whole house uses fabric and fitting time more efficiently than a single blind.

Blind type sits across all of these. A roller blind is the simplest to make, vertical blinds are economical on very wide windows because the price does not rise as steeply with width, and a Roman blind carries more fabric and more hand work than either. Electric blinds add the motor and, for mains, an electrician.

Cheap ready made blinds or made to measure

A ready made blind is cheaper on the day and a made to measure blind is cheaper over the years, because a ready made blind is cut to the nearest standard size, uses a lighter mechanism and is often replaced within a few years. Made to measure costs more because it is cut to the millimetre for your recess, uses a clutch or motor rated for the fabric weight, comes in the fabric you chose rather than the six on the shelf, and is fitted by someone who will come back if anything is wrong.

Where the ready made saving goes

Take a standard bedroom window as an example. A ready made blind in the nearest stock width leaves a gap of a few centimetres on one or both sides, so light comes in around the edge and the blackout fabric is not doing its job. You then buy a second blind, or curtains over the top, or live with it.

The clutch on a budget blind is sized for the lightest fabric in the range, so a heavier blackout creeps down and the chain skips after a year or two. Add the cost of a fitter if you cannot hang it yourself, and the gap between the two prices has usually closed before the blind is a few years old.

There are windows where ready made is fine, such as a shed, a garage or a rented room you will leave next year. For a living room bay, a bedroom that needs real blackout or a bifold, the ready made route tends to mean a visible gap, a sagging tube or a return trip to the shop. Our Perfect Fit blinds price guide goes into this comparison for no drill blinds in particular.

How much is one window

One window costs from £65 for a small roller blind to £250 and upwards for a large electric one, fitted. Three examples show how the same question gets three answers.

  • A small bathroom window, around 600mm wide, in a moisture resistant roller fabric: at or near the starting price for £65.
  • A standard bedroom window, around 1.2 metres wide, in a blackout roller: towards the middle of £95 to £450 per blind.
  • A living room window, around 2 metres wide, in a day and night blind: towards the upper part of £175 to £390 per blind.

A single blind still gets a free home visit and the same fitting, so there is no penalty for only wanting one. If you are weighing a blind against a pair of curtains for that one window, our guide on blinds or curtains sets out the differences.

Blinds prices in Rainham and East London homes

What a house costs to blind around here depends mostly on the windows it was built with. The 1930s semis across Rainham, Hornchurch, Elm Park and Romford have a front bay, a back living room window, three bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom, and the bay is what moves the figure because it counts as three or five blinds. Where the bay is wide and the budget tight, vertical blinds on a curved track keep the cost down.

Made to measure blinds in a Rainham home

New build flats in Stratford, Canning Town, Barking Riverside and Beam Park have fewer windows but taller ones, often floor to ceiling, so each blind is larger and the total for a two bed flat can match a small house. Leasehold rules often rule out drilling into frames, which points to Perfect Fit or ceiling fixed blinds. Victorian terraces in Ilford, East Ham and Barking have small sash windows and a lot of them, where plain rollers and Venetians keep each line low. Extensions with bifolds in Upminster, Grays and South Ockendon add one large electric blind that is usually the single biggest line on the quote.

How to get a written quote

The only way to know the exact cost of blinds for your home is a measured quote, and ours is free and in writing. You book a visit, we come to the house at a time that suits, measure every window you want covered, bring fabric samples, and talk through which blind type suits each room. After the visit you receive a written quote listing each window, the blind type, the fabric and the fitted price, with nothing added later. There is no pressure to decide on the day and no charge if you decide not to go ahead.

Every blind we make is fitted to current UK child safety rules. The Make it Safe campaign from the British Blind and Shutter Association explains what to check on blinds you already own.[1]

Frequently asked questions about how much do blinds cost UK

Do you charge for fitting?

No. Our prices are for blinds measured, made and fitted, and the home visit to measure is free. The written quote is the full fitted price for each window.

How much is one window?

From £65 for a small roller blind, fitted, rising with size, fabric and blind type. A single blind gets the same free visit and fitting as a whole house.

How much do blinds cost for a 3 bed house?

A three bed semi usually needs eight to ten blinds and is priced window by window, with most bedroom and bathroom blinds near the bottom of the ranges and the bay and any electric blind near the top. The written quote gives the exact total for your sizes.

Are made to measure blinds worth the extra?

For main rooms, bays, blackout bedrooms and doors, yes, because they fit the recess exactly, use a mechanism rated for the fabric and last much longer. For a shed or a short term rental a ready made blind may be enough.

How much are blinds fitted compared with supply only?

Our fitted price includes measuring, making and fitting, so there is nothing to add. A supply only price leaves you to measure, fit and carry the risk of a wrong size, which is where the apparent saving tends to go.

Is the home visit really free?

Yes. We measure, bring samples and send a written quote at no cost and with no obligation, across Rainham, East London and Essex.
